Construction Innovations

The Construction Innovations program allows students to rotate through a variety of courses introducing them to all of our construction offerings. They will use a variety of powered and non-powered tools and equipment. For a complete list, please review the following programs:

• Carpentry
• Construction Trades
• HVAC
• Electrical Trades
• Welding

• Work pants with a belt (no shorts or athletic pants)
• Cotton shirt
• Hard-soled, leather work boots
• A high visibility vest (purchased through program uniform store)
• Hardhats and safety glasses will be provided and must be worn in the lab at all times.

Essential Processing Skills Needed for Success

• Independently perform basic computer skills; for example manage passwords and access online platforms
• Apply problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Ability to follow simple and multi-step verbal and/or written instructions
• Demonstrate willingness to ask for help 
• Ability to manage one’s time; for example, to complete an assignment/project within a given time frame
• Ability to accept constructive feedback and adjust work accordingly
• Adhere to and follow all program safety rules and expectations and assume personal responsibility for safety
• Ability to manage the demands and organizational needs of attending 2 different schools
• Ability to learn and independently operate/use power tools and/or heavy machinery
• Demonstrate familiarity with tools
• Work independently both individually and in groups
• Maintain positive and professional attitude and behavior
• Take the initiative to start task(s) once instructions have been given
• Communicate information effectively with peers and instructors while using technical terminology
• Ability to read and apply the information in technical work-related texts
• Ability to take notes and generalize or apply new information to problem solving processes
• Have knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications; able to read a tape measure to the nearest 16th, and add/subtract mixed numbers and fractions
• Ability to accept constructive feedback and adjust work accordingly
• Ability to learn and safely operate/use cutting tools and other sharp objects independently

Essential Physical Skills Needed for Success

• Keep hand and arm steady or held in one position for a long period of time
• Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers, hands and arms to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
• Able to kneel for long periods, lift and carry objects of 40 pounds or more, and handle taxing physical activity
• Tolerate a construction environment which includes high places, small spaces, extreme temperatures, dirty spaces, loud noises, and a variety of construction-related smells
• Able to see up close clearly
• Able to stand and move for extended periods of time
• Willingness and ability to adhere to a professional dress code and/or uniform
